Situated on the site of an 11th century city, Bhojapal, founded by Raja Bhoja, Bhopal today presents a multi-faceted profile; the old city with its ethnicity, fine old palaces and mosques and the modern new city with its well laid out parks and gardens, broad avenues and streamlined modern facilities.

Jama Masjid, the beautiful mosque built in 1837 by Kudsia Begum reflects the architectural glory of the city, with its gold spikes that crowns the minarets of the mosque. Sikander Jehan, daughter of Kudsia begum, also a built mosque, Moti Masjid, which is a replica of Delhi's Jama Masjid in 1860.
A perfect blend of Post Renaissance and Gothic styles, Shaukat Mahal was designed by a Frenchman. It is situated at the entrance to the Chowk area in the heart of the city. Another monument of importance worth seeing on the tour packages for Bhopal is the Sadar Manzil, which was the hall of public audience of the former rulers of Bhopal.
The Taj-ul-Masajid, built by Nawab Shah Jehan Begum, is one of the largest mosques in Asia. In the prayer hall, a wall named as Quibla is carved with 11 recessed arches. A three-day Ijtima congregation held here annually draws people from all over the country.
The Gohar Mahal, situated behind Shaukat Mahal on the banks of the Upper Lake, is a magnificent palace; built in 1820, reflect a perfect blend of Hindu and Islamic architecture, which one gets to see on the tour packages to Bhopal.
